Hey! It’s been awhile since I did an intro and wanted to say “hello” to all our followers. 👋 My name is Meg and I’m the co-founder and Editor-in-chief of Got a Girl Crush (pictured here with my husband @danbones on one of our last nights living in NYC—hello LA, you are our very new home)! 🌴 Girl Crush started in 2009 as a @tumblr with @earthtoandrea (who I met online) as a mutual catch-all to post about women we admired who were doing cool shit. Fast-forward to 2011 (we finally met IRL!) and we printed our very first issue 1️⃣ with @magcloud (a print-to-order sure that’s a great way to get into publishing without fronting the cost) featuring interviews with badass babes like @carolynpennypackerriggs @lisacongdon @jennyslate and @jeanasohn (with cover art by @erinwengrovius). As a photographer, starting a magazine was a great way to approach women I admired, to interview and photograph (and hopefully befriend!) them in a non-creepy way (ha). ❤️ After a great response to our little publication, we printed our second issue 2️⃣ out-of-pocket in 2012 with a beautiful cover by @carolinekhwang and featured the likes of @allisonschulnik @arielealasko @thehighsign @jessicahische @joythebaker @kayeblegvad @tomtommag @tuesdaybassen and more! There has NEVER been a shortage of inspiring women with stories we wanted to share. Since then, the über talented @celesteprevost came on board on Issue 3️⃣ and shrank it to it’s cutie digest size with the foil-embossed logo that is the design we use today! Andrea has since stepped down in her involvement in the mag to be a super cool mom, tastemaker, and internet guru. My very good friend and contributor @amandastosz stepped up to be Creative Director as of Issue 4️⃣. We just sent Issue 8️⃣ to our favorite printers in Winnipeg and cannot wait to share! Girl Crush aims to disrupt the broken narrative of most women's publications and tell stories of all ages, races, and backgrounds of women all over the world. We believe that print is not dead and that there is value to having a tangible medium to read, digest, and share--rather than sharing a link online that is easily forgotten tomorrow. ✌️✌️✌️
via @tubmanstamp: On April 21, 2016, the day after then-U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced plans to add Harriet Tubman to the front of the twenty-dollar bill, Donald T***p was interviewed on the Today Show. He made his intentions clear: "Andrew Jackson had a great history and I think it's very rough when you take somebody off the bill. Andrew Jackson had a history of tremendous success for the country.... I would love to leave Andrew Jackson and see if we can maybe come up with another denomination. Maybe we do the $2 bill or we do another bill. I don't like seeing it." . The T***p administration had officially scuttled the plan to put Harriet Tubman on the $20. The ubiquity of currency makes it a powerful vector through which the mentality of white supremacy can continue to permeate our culture. This is why it was such a pivotal moment when it was announced that Harriet Tubman would appear on the new $20 bill. This would constitute a monumental symbolic change, disrupting the pattern of white men who appear on our money, and by putting her on the most popular note in circulation, indicate exactly what kind of a life we choose to hold up; what values we most hope to emulate. The impact that seeing the face of Harriet Tubman staring back at you from a $20 bill cannot be underestimated. Who we choose to honor as a society affects the moral attitudes that are baked into us as we grow up, and this sort of representation can subtly but deeply effect someone's conception of themselves and their place within society.
