Women on Waves aims to prevent unsafe abortions and empower women to exercise their human rights to physical and mental autonomy. They trust that women can do a medical abortion themselves and make sure that women have access to medical abortion and information through innovative strategies. But ultimately it is about giving women the tools to resist repressive cultures and laws. Not every woman has the possibility to be a public activist but there are things we can all do ourselves. Founder and Director of Women on Waves and Women on Web, Dr. Rebecca Gomperts studied medicine and visual arts in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After graduating Gomperts became an abortion doctor and sailed with the @greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, as its doctor and as an environmental activist. Janna Tamimi, more commonly known as @janna.jihad or Janna Jihad Ayyad, is a Palestinian youth activist and amateur journalist. In May 2017 @a_leighsmith traveled to a small village in Area C of the West Bank, Palestine to meet the Tamini family. Her lens captures Janna and her activist family in a humanely familiar light: as people much like ourselves. They worry for their children, they take silly selfies, they draw flowers on their bedroom walls, all while the reality of the occupation is at their doorstep.
