(t/w: depression, eating disorders, childhood bullying, suicide)
Have you watched @pen15show on @hulu yet? @annaryankonkle and @mayaerskine have created, written, and star in something I’ve never seen on screen before (in particular, shout-out to the discovering masturbation episode!). The show as a whole hit pretty damn hard for me as middle school was the toughest years for me. Some real talk:
While sorting through old family photos at my parents house in Ohio recently, I uncovered a lot of awkward adolescent snaps of myself and with them came a lot of hurt and memories I often try to bury deep. Puberty was unkind to me as was to most, but I was particularly the target of aggressive bullying. In 6 th grade, for example, I had braces, a unibrow, and a lisp (later followed by a back brace, boobs, and “excessive” body hair). Kids would try to make me say S-words (I could barely say “Yeth”) and nicknamed me “Prozac” because I outwardly exhibited signs of depression. I was mocked for having hairy arms and for using a large vocabulary. The bullying happened in class in front of teachers who did nothing, on the bus where I couldn’t escape, and then from my once closest friends from elementary school who distanced themselves from me as I became collateral in their course to popularity. I started waxing, plucking, and using hair depilatories before I was 13. I started purging in high school and didn’t have a handle on that until after college. I only now at 35 have a healthy relationship with my body.
I attempted suicide in 7th grade and was put in therapy... (shout-out to therapy!)
I guess I’m posting this here because I just feel so awful for my younger self seeing these photos and what she endured. I guess I’m grateful for who it’s shaped me to be—but god damn if kids aren’t the fucking cruelest. Go watch @pen15show if you “came of age during the late 90s/early 2000s! — @moonbeam_sega_genesis

LOVING Issue 04 babe @lizzobeeating’s interview on @nymag’s @thecut (“It’s Just a Matter of Time Till Everybody Loves Lizzo As much as she loves herself”)! LOVE that she’s getting the fame she deserves for the talented powerhouse that she is! And did you know her flute—that’s Sasha Flute to you—has her own insta now: @sashabefluting (Lizzo is a classically trained flautist). Cannot wait for her next (and first major label) album “Cuz I Love You” our this spring (on April 19th) and to see her on @2dopequeens’ last HBO specials. IT’S THE YEAR OF LIZZO IF YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW! #biggrrrlsmallworld #lizzo #100percentthatbitch #sashaflute #blackherstory

Hi there! 🌹It’s your editor, Meg @moonbeam_sega_genesis here! A little real talk because I believe in being transparent and sharing vulnerability since Insta gives false notions of hunky-doriness 24/7/365.
If you’ve been a follower/reader/supporter of Girl Crush over the years, you may have noticed a slow down over here on the social meeds and the website. I just recently moved across be country almost 4 months ago (NYC after 13 years to LA) and bit off more than I could chew by trying to relocate my life AND simultaneously produce another issue (numero 8—the first time I’ve published twice in one year). It is a privilege I get to do this in my free time (this is not my real job) and help share stories of other women around the world. But the demands of turning out new “content,” competing for the same types of advertising/sponsorship that influencers garner (this is 100% funded by reader support + very spare ads), trying to hack the algorithm of @instagram’s now pay-to-play model for small biz, compensating all our contributors, and producing print issues that are worthy of the stories they contain (my genuine apologies to @mennlay @supernovawomen @anjalouise @solonjeburnett @laundryday.co in particular for misspellings/typos in your #womenincannabis feature in the current issue—that is not representative of our publication), let alone trying to live and give myself the space to recalibrate has taken its toll. I’m going to lay low for awhile and regroup to do my best for the Got a Girl Crush community. You’ll still get newsletters from us on occasion and we will still help serve as a platform to promote others, but for now a little hiatus is in order. 🌹 This started as a @tumblr TEN YEARS AGO HOLY SHIT! 🌹Thanks for your support. It means so much and there’s hopefully some exciting things in store soon... in the meantime, consider purchasing the latest issue (a few typos and all, print serves as humility y’all) with this bitchin cover by @lydia_ortiz and sharing it with a friend.
