I (Meg) was in San Fran for a whopping 24 hours before roadtrippin’ down Highway 1 to LA for the week, but snagged some quick girl-time with Andrea at Sightglass coffee in SoMa for a mini girl-crush reunion!

Of course we showed up basically wearing the same outfit—but that’s why this blog gels well from opposite ends of the country. Great sartorial minds think alike ;)

Bikers, big hair and baby theft. The babes of (what is easily my new favorite movie) Easy Wheels (1989) won me over within the first minute of this amazingly campy 80’s flick.

Abandoned by her parents and raised by wolves, She Wolf and the gang cruise around the state, um, “acquiring” baby girls. Terrible, perhaps. Not to worry, there are perks to a forced wolf pack up-bringing. Got a Girl Crush On: Prudence Fenton (Animator, Director, Producer, Imagineer)

Animation Director, Pee-wee’s Playhouse (1986-1991); Executive Producer, Liquid Television (1991-1994)

Not long after the debut of MTV, my grandfather called the cable company and asked if he could have the channel scrambled. In the early days MTV was a showcase of bizarre animation, giving airtime to experimental work. At the time Prudence Fenton was a young animator just out of art school, hired by MTV to make station IDs. She continued throughout her career to push ideas and technologies as far as she could. By 1986 it worked! Far-out creativity made its way into network television with the legendary Saturday morning children’s program, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, where Prudence Fenton worked as the animation director. She brought the Penny Cartoon and other stop-motion wonders to the show.

Then in 1991, along with Japhet Asher, she worked to make Liquid Television a reality, which further embraced the experimental by commissioning independent animators to make short segments and creating a venue in which to show them. With Weird Vibes, the resurgence of Liquid Television, and new episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head, maybe television is ready to get back into that territory again.

When I called her up asking for an interview, she was surprised I knew who she was. I thought, “Shouldn’t everyone?” She is a pioneer.

VICE: How did you start working for MTV?
Prudence Fenton: In art school I started doing my own animations by doing things with flip cards and shooting on Super 8. From there, I was hired by a company called Broadcast Arts that was about to do station IDs for MTV.

Early in Spacek’s career, during the height of 60s coffee house singer-songwriters of Greenwich Village, Sissy recorded a song proclaiming her disillusionment and shock over John Lennon (who on the cover of his newest album Two Virgins appeared in full-frontal nudity with his then-girlfriend Yoko Ono, shocking many fans). The song never caught on, but I love it!

I finally got to see the documentary Battle For Brooklyn (which follows the very public and passionate fight waged by residents and business owners of Brooklyn’s historic Prospect Heights neighborhood facing condemnation of their property to make way for the polarizing Atlantic Yards project—the densest real estate development in U.S. history SEE IT IF IT’S SCREENING SOON NEAR YOU OR ORGANIZE A SCREENING IN YOUR CITY) on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Skillshare’s day of free classes in solidarity with Occupy Wallstreet’s General Strike. It saddened me greatly to bare witness to corporate greed that values dollars over denizens and corrupt politicians who do not fairly represent their constituencies. But through the grimness of this story shone a woman whom I’m proud to say represents my neighborhood, Letitia James.

Going against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Borough President Marty Markowitz and developer Bruce Ratner, James opposed the use of eminent domain to evict her constituents, selling the MTA’s Atlantic Yardsproperty below the market value, and keeping the planning of the project out of the New York City Council.

Tish is also lawyer, activist and politician in the Working Families Party. She puts her career on the line for her work for what she believes is fair and true. She is certainly one to be admired.

Got a Girl Crush On: The work of Angeline Gragasin

Director Angeline Gragasin created The Animals with an all female executive level production team: something that is oddly and sadly a rarity in the industry. Along with Gargasin (also lead actress) was Caitlin Doughty (writer) Rachel Wolther (producer), Meredith Zielke (DP), Meredith Ries (Production designer) and Abby Walton (Costume designer). Together they have successfully and triumphantly created a short film that I so yearn for; cinematically surreal yet not unsatisfyingly short, a well written script, engaging concept complimented with this mystifying, elongated and [hypnotizing] question mark that underlies the whole film and draws you in and challenges you to keep watching and figure out this perfectly quirky narrative. I want to tell you what this film is about in one of those fantastically well rounded sentences that sums up its style and intent, but for the life of me: describing The Animals would be like trying to describe the depth and beauty of a Rothko to someone totally unfamiliar with his work. Gragasin’s film is visceral and strangely moving in this uncomfortable, jarring kind of way, it’s absurdly beautiful in its execution and it’s the best short film you will see all week (or month, or year). Undeniably, though, after watching this film you may feel a little inquisitive, a little lost. Luckily we picked the brains and spoke to this wonder director cum actress cum total badass, Angeline Gragasin. Enjoy.

There are some really strange and lovely moments in this just-released short film from Angeline - I don’t know how much of this tale is a dream or an overdose or something else entirely; but there’s a lot of choices in mood and direction here that are very charming and very different.
