Diane Renay - “Watch Out, Sally!”

Got a girl crush on: Diane Renay

    From Stylus Magazine:

“Renay was actually a Navy base queen in the mid-60s, properly arousing the claustrophobic libidos of sailors stateside and wide, but “Watch Out, Sally!” was something totally different, a mock Shangri-Las slice of pissed-offedness that at times actually outshines its influence. Over a Bo Diddley beat, Renay mouths off about going to meet her forbidden boyfriend; the tough girl thing is a little forced, but the neat whispers-and-claps chorus is great, especially when it opens up onto a legitimately raw fuzz guitar solo. Sort of arresting given the sheer squeakiness of Renay’s reputation. “

Found off the excellent Girl Groups Mixtape we posted yesterday. And would you just look at that darling outfit above?

  2. Girl Groups Mixtape by Mike Powell for Stylus Magazine

“This is a completely non-definitive selection of 15 of my favorite songs from the girl group era, sucker cuts included, with some history and a little reflection. In the interest of being concise, I didn’t repeat artists, but suffice it to say that a lot of these groups have at least 3 or 4 absolute classics.”

I don’t know. It seems pretty definitive to me. Originally compiled by Mike Powell for the long defunct (but still online!) Stylus Magazine. The accompanying article is an excellent and necessary read that includes a short description and brief history of each track. Huge kudos to So Tough So Cute for digging this up!

    Tracklist:

01 Jackie DeShannon - “When You Walk in the Room”
02 The Chiffons - “Nobody Knows WHat’s Goin’ On (In My Mind But Me)”
03 The Jaynettes - “Sally Go Round the Roses”
04 The Shangri-Las - “Out in the Streets”
    05 The Chantels - “Maybe”
    06 The Cookies - “I Never Dreamed”
07 Lesley Gore - “You Don’t Own Me”
    08 The Crystals - “Uptown”

    Artist: She Trinity
    Album: Destroy That Boy

The She Trinity - “He Fought the Law”

Found off the excellent “Girls with Guitars” compilation, Destroy That Boy. Found on Thizz.Face.Disco. More on the The She Trinity:

“The She Trinity were a UK all girl Pop Group and one of those groups that seem to have slipped through the net of fame, which is surprising given that for the most part all-girl groups in England who actually played instruments were very unusual in the 1960s.” - Wikipedia

  4. Lesley Gore - “You Don’t Own Me”

So much sass. So much passion. You can tell she always means what she sings
