  1. Got A Girl Crush On: These Pizza-Loving “Suffragettes”
We have far too much love for this photo/caption to ruin it  with a little fact-checking. Thank you, brave women, for paving the way for what is (quite literally) every weekend of our lives.

“In 1921, early suffragettes often donned a bathing suit and ate pizza in large groups to annoy men…it was a custom at the time”

  2. Got A Girl Crush On: New York City’s Miss Subways

Apart from having one of the coolest museum experiences in town*, the New York Transit Museum acts as a fantastic historical troubadour of this awesome city — told through its public transportation system. The Meet Miss Subways is one of my favorite anecdotes in New York’s underground history.

In an exhibition currently showing at the museum, Photographer Fiona Gardner and journalist Amy Zimmer track down and catch up with the former beauty pageant contestants, turning out a lovely portrait series.

*In full disclosure, I did an internship in the New York Transit Museum’s Archives and am probably a tad bit partial regarding the awesomeness of the NYTM.

  3. Got A Girl Crush On: The simple and whimsical collages of Katrien de Blauwer

Belgium based artist Katrien De Blauwer combines only two images in each piece, yet magically creates a fascinating & mysterious story. Oh, and don’t even get me started on her amazing color palette, created solely through found images and found paper that she somehow manages to maintain throughout her entire, huge, gorgeous portfolio. Love with a capital L.

…And, as a little post-nod to the Oscars, here are three pieces from Katrien’s series, “Cinematic Cuts”:

  4. Got A Girl Crush On: Bandit Brand’s vintage shirts for the Old Lady in all of us.

This line just speaks to my biker’s old lady / 70’s groupie within. After seeing these, I can’t not just throw out my entire wardrobe and deplete my bank account for every single one these shirts. If I haven’t scratched enough heads as the young, often hungover, rare book librarian before — I surely will now. Don’t bro if you don’t know me.

  5. Got A Girl Crush On: The Original Riot Grrrl, Shirley Temple

Was Shirley Temple the original riot grrrl? I loved this outfit, which Shirley wore in The Little Princess. When I was in Grad School, I pretty much tried to dress like this. Get the look at ModCloth with these cute picks:

    1. Rock Shop Dress 2. Follow the Cedar Boot, 3. Season Change is Good Scarf

  6. Got A Girl Crush On: Gordon Park’s photos of Helen Frankenthaler in her New York Studio

More like Helen Babenthaler How did I manage to receive an Art History degree without realizing how adorable this woman was?

  7. Got A Girl Crush On: Tina Belcher’s Music Video with St. Vincent

The weird-ass Tina Belcher has been on my GAGC to-blog list for sometime. Taking the awkward pubescent girl trope wildly further than most people are comfortable, she won me over with her butt-fascination-driven, Erotic Friend Fiction: Buttloose.

As if it could Tina and Bob’s Burgers could possibly get better in my eyes, I see this amazing Bob’s Buskers cover with St. Vincent.

This one goes in the ol’ Butt Bank.

  8. Got a Girl Crush On: 1968’s “The Girl on a Motorcycle” (starring Marianne Faithfull) dubbed to music from Chairlift’s “Amanaemonesia”!

(the official video is equally awesome, btw)

  9. Got A Girl Crush On: British Motorcyclist, Olga Kevelos

    jorilives:

Olga Kevelos was a British Motorcycle trials and enduro rider in the fifties and sixties. She was the only woman who ever won two gold medals at the International Six-Day Trial.

  10. Got A Girl Crush On: Ilana Glazer in Sugar Boy’s Kung Fu Mom

UCB alum, gamer, and 1/2 of the sketch comedy duo, Broad City — Budding comedy superstar, Ilana Glazer’s been killing it as of late.

Today I stumbled on to this amazing Sugar Boy video and I just keep re-watching Ilana rollerskating, karate chopping and high-fiving her way through my beloved borough in attempts to retrieve her favorite baseball card. If you make it through the entire video without the slightest bit of a Girl Crush yourself, I’d keep it to yourself. Ilana has some mad nipple-ripping skills.

“Go kick a butt now right now, baby!”
