Got a Girl Crush On: Kooky animal lady, humorist, & illustrator, Lisa Hanawalt

I first was introduced to Lisa’s work by getting bold with a friend and posing in our birthday suits for Mike Perry’s drawing collective marathon, Get Nude, Get Drawn series and was smitten by her take at the could be tried age-old format of live figure drawing (editor’s note - the is not me in the previous link). Upon seeking out her actual portfolio, I can’t stop giggling at the world Lisa creates (like Coyote Doggirl, or Tuca the Toucan who lives in the city).

Check out more of her work over at www.lisahanawalt.com!

Got a Girl Crush On: Sally England’s Ultra Modern Macramé

This is your middle school hemp necklace making hobby on steroids and your mom’s 70s craze with a streamlined twist. Holy cow dying over all of Sally’s work! Follow her on Instagram for more swoon worthy textile goodness too.

Got a Girl Crush On: The Kitchen Witch

Whether it’s sharing drool-inducing photos for her amazing recipes like crema de guacamole with totopos, rhubarb vanilla cordial, or picking her 5 fave recipes from her blog from 2013 thus far (like limoncello); spinning her own yarn, or fermenting magical potions—DC Foodswap founder, Jess Schreibstein, (who let’s you in how to start a food swap) is an all out modern-day woman remixing old-school ideas.

Follow Jess on Instagram or check out her blog!

Got a Girl Crush On: Bethel’s crocheted yarn bombed rocks!

G’day! This simple how-to is adorable. All you need is yarn and a crochet hook and some rocks! These rocks, rock (sorry I couldn’t help myself).

For more on yarn bombing, check out the yarn graffiti queen, Olek!

Got a Girl Crush On: A Urine Powered Generator designed by four teenage girls in Africa

An amazing accomplishment by four brilliant girls. The girls are are Duro-Aina Adebola (14), Akindele Abiola (14), Faleke Oluwatoyin (14) and Bello Eniola (15).

1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.

The system works like this:

  • Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
  • The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
  • The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
  • This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.

Got a Girl Crush On: Nails and Ales’ mani and brewski blog
We know custom nail art is all the rage right now, but this blog takes it to an awesome new level by interpreting beer labels into tiny gems and reviewing the suds that inspired them. Genius!
Check it out at nailsandales.tumblr.com!

Got a Girl Crush On: A Well Traveled Woman

Part style blog (á la tomboy style—which she’s already been interviewed on), part farmer’s daughter vibes, part DIY attagirl, part hot mama—I cannot get enough of Bekah’s Tumblr, A Well Traveled Woman (and these photos are only from her Instagram!).

Who says you can’t paint your nails if you are likely to get dirt under them and can’t appreciate some sartorial wit when you have a penchant for living off the land?

The city girl in me has major wide-open-spaces-yurt-dreams jealousy going on.

Got a Girl Crush On: Hannah Hart of My Drunk Kitchen

"Pizza, like old Coca Cola, is best served flat!"

New personal hero, y’all.

(thanks to hellonicole for the tip-off!)

Got A Girl Crush On: The Murderettes (this is seriously amazing)

winesburgohio:

“christmas machine” was written by four of my friends and recorded in truly classic grrrl style: straight to a fisher-price tape deck in the back seat of a car, in short skirts, knees up on the seat, smoking cigarettes, etc. the whole nine yards. i feel like it’s in the same spirit as this skirts song, posted earlier today by marisa (meltzer):

“No instruments? No talent? No problem! We went to the mall and bought toy instruments and wore matching outfits and wrote songs about Nabokov.”

a follow-up via email also unearthed this anecdotal gem:

“Jeremy (college ex) also found a K Recs comp that we’re on with a song about Miss Moneypenny. We also covered “Fever” and a Dusty Springfield song and had a song that I wrote when I was two about Darth Vader. 1996 was a really precocious time for me.”
One of my guys! Line 'em up.

Got a girl crush on: Terrarium Parties and Polka Dot Robot

Last night, I had the honor of hosting a terrarium party with the crew of Polka Dot Robot and friends as my guests! Polka Dot Erin and I took a terrarium class at Workshop last month and immediately knew we had to spread our newfound knowledge with friends. We got our hands dirty, wined and dined on Snake Bites and Indian food, and gorged ourselves with Miette pastries than I could ever dream of. We terrar’d our derrieres off until we eventually ran out of pebbles and had to make like rock bandits and ‘procure’ some more (apologies to our neighbors who are a few hundred pebbles poorer this morning).

Head on over to Polka Dot Robot for more!
