Got a Girl Crush On: Replica

This 3/4 female punk band from Oakland puts on an amazing live show, like the one I saw down by the train tracks in Pittsburgh. They are fast, loud, passionate, unapologetic, and 100% girl crush material.

Got a Girl Crush On: Artist Phoebe Little’s field recordings of Indian radio

Nebraska based artist Phoebe Little’s trip abroad yielded some magical gems she recorded and compiled for a TAPE released on new Brooklyn-based alterna distro, Standard Issue. The cassette (yes, as in pre-CD, as in PRE-MP3) is accompanied by artwork in her “signature hyper-detailed, psychedelic style with execution inspired by Indian embroidery.”

Got a Girl Crush On: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ video for “Retreat.”

Sharon was diagnosed with cancer after she finished recording her new album Give the People What They Want. In an interview with 91.3 WYEP in Pittsburgh, she said the meaning of the song “Retreat” changed during that time.

"They talked about doing an animated video and once I saw the animated video, it was no longer me telling some guy to retreat, it was like me telling the cancer to retreat,” says Sharon.

The video is directed by the crush-worthy animator/filmmaker Lizzi Akana.

Don’t miss the priceless animated booty shake at 1:12.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings are on tour now, check out show dates here.

Got a Girl Crush On: New music video for St. Vincent’s “Digital Witness”

All hail queen Annie! If you haven’t yet checked out her new album, get thee hence!

**READER SUBMISSION**

This is a total VHS girl crush collab between Caitlin Denny (director) and myself (concept & music). The song is about reclaiming a moment you lost. Whether someone took that moment in time from you, or that time has so muddled the memory that you have to reinvent it. We were heavily inspired by Daisies/ 70s & 80s feminist video & performance art (Pipilotti Rist!) and wanted to incorporate surreal Liquid Sky-ish effects. Overall, a mystery for the ladies!
