Got a Girl Crush On: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ video for “Retreat.”

Sharon was diagnosed with cancer after she finished recording her new album Give the People What They Want. In an interview with 91.3 WYEP in Pittsburgh, she said the meaning of the song “Retreat” changed during that time.

“They talked about doing an animated video and once I saw the animated video, it was no longer me telling some guy to retreat, it was like me telling the cancer to retreat,” says Sharon.

The video is directed by the crush-worthy animator/filmmaker Lizzi Akana.
